If you’re looking for a unique and adorable way to celebrate your child’s first birthday, a cake smash photoshoot with Sydney Altizer Photography is the perfect way to do it! This fun and playful trend involves dressing your little one in a cute outfit and letting them go to town on a cake while I photograph all of the messy and adorable moments. In addition to all the “cake smashing” photos, I also take some photos of your little one without the cake, and can also incorporate parent/guardian shots if you would like for me to do so! All of this will take place at my Radford photography studio.

To start planning the cake smash photoshoot, you’ll need to first choose a theme and/or color scheme. Popular themes include “Wild One,” “Princess,” “Boho,” “Superhero,” and more. I have a variety of backdrop themes, but am also willing to create new sets for you. Once you’ve chosen your theme, we will work together to plan the outfit and cake design. I have a variety of outfits in my client closet that clients are welcome to use, and I also provide the cake for the photoshoot.  

On the day of the photoshoot, we will start with photos without the cake. Once we incorporate the cake, things tend to get messy! Some babies dig in and put their whole face in the cake while others may not love the cake as much. If the baby needs some motivation to “dig in”, I will have parents assist getting the baby started by putting their hands in the cake and getting the baby to try it as well. Either way, we will capture your baby’s actions and emotions through the whole process.

If you want the photos in time for your baby’s actual birthday, I recommend scheduling the photoshoot for when your baby is around 11 months old. As far as actually scheduling with me, you should reach out as soon as you know you want the photos so that I have time to acquire the materials and build your cake smash set/theme.
